St. John's is fortunate to have in its congregation many who, although they may not be directly associated with the choir, have multiple musical talents. From stringed instruments, to brass, to woodwinds, to guitar, even harp. These friends are always happy to provide special music or anthem accompaniment when asked. Because of this, it's not unusual to hear gospel music one Sunday and a string quartet the next.
Rob Styberski, Music Director and Organist since 1996, came to St. John’s with over 30 years experience in a wide variety of church music traditions: Southern and American Baptist, United Presbyterian, United Methodist, Missouri Synod Lutheran, Catholic and Episcopalian. He was an Honors Scholar at Andrews University and a Dean’s List recipient and Pi Kappa Lambda scholar at Western Michigan University. Well respected by his peers, Rob served as Dean of the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Guild of Organists from 1992 to 1994, and an executive board member of the Detroit Chapter from 2001 to 2003.

The Chancel Choir is a volunteer choir of 17-25 adults from varied backgrounds, some with previous choir experience, some first-time singers who learn to love it. The choir meets on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 PM and prior to Sunday 10:30 Eucharist for rehearsals. All find that choir membership is an excellent way to serve the weekly worship needs of the parish, expand their view into the music of the church, and to gain meaningful fellowship with other parishioners and each other.

In addition to the regular services throughout the year, the choir provides the musical foundation for the services of Tenebrae (Wednesday of Holy Week), Good Friday, and a new Festival Eucharist service on New Year's Eve, featuring a major work with instruments and varied service music. This service has become one of our most popular. As an outreach ministry, once a year, the choir performs a 40-minute secular and sacred music program for the residents of St. Anne's Mead, an Episcopal retirement home.
The Children's Choir has become stronger and stronger since moving its rehearsals to mid-service on Sundays. Now typically comprised of fifteen or more singers, they perform anthems (sometimes with bells or other instruments) about once a month. The highlight of their musical year is the Annual Christmas Pageant, the traditional retelling of the story of the birth of Jesus. Here, in full costume and utilizing talented young readers--and with carols sung by the congregation--the children put forth their best efforts to create a dramatic musical presentation that everyone continues to talk about throughout the year. The Children's Choir is open to children aged approximately four to ten (K through 6).
St. John's is proud to have two pipe organs in the building. The larger one is a 3-manual, 41-rank Schantz pipe organ installed in 1988, speaking from the front of the building, directly behind the choir seating. It is a well-rounded instrument, amply recreating the music from many centuries and often supporting large diocesan events. The smaller pipe organ is a 7-rank Reuter pipe organ at the rear of the lovely chapel adjacent to the sanctuary. It is completely unenclosed and visible and provides just the right accompaniment for services of 50 people or less. This instrument was installed in 1998 by St. John's parishioners, supervised by Cascarelli & Associates and is a gift from one family.
